The centrepiece was Do I Wanna Know? — released June 19, 2013, premiered live before a note had been officially heard, built around a guitar riff that Turner said fell out of him one afternoon in Sheffield and refused to leave. It is seven notes and completely hypnotic. Do I Wanna Know? was the first Arctic Monkeys song to enter the Billboard Hot 100 American Songwriter, reached number one on the Billboard Alternative Songs chart in January 2014, and is certified quintuple-platinum in the UK as of 2026, with over 1.5 billion YouTube views. The song's music video — directed by David Wilson with Blinkink — is a black screen with a single white waveform animating in real time to the music. That waveform became the AM album cover.
