350 horsepower. 600 kilograms. The most cinematic racing car ever built — and the machine Steve McQueen chose to drive with a broken foot at Sebring, finishing just 22 seconds behind the winning Ferrari 512 S.

The Porsche 908 was launched in 1968 as Zuffenhausen's answer to the Ford GT40 — a purpose-built endurance machine powered by a 3.0-litre air-cooled flat-eight engine and fitted to a spaceframe so light it was pressurized with air to detect stress cracks. When the 1969 Group 6 regulations eliminated the minimum weight requirement and mandated open cockpits, Porsche's engineers went further. The steel spaceframe became aluminium. The body was moulded in plastic weighing less than 30 pounds. Titanium axles and a lightweight five-speed gearbox brought the finished 908/02 Spyder to just 600 kilograms — an astonishing figure for a long-distance racer. The Stuttgart wind tunnel then refined the bodywork into the legendary Flunder form — German for "flat fish" — a stretched, flattened aerodynamic wedge that became one of the most beautiful shapes in motorsport history. That same development programme also served as the first real-world evaluation of ABS braking technology, not adopted for racing then but now universal in every production vehicle on earth.

On track, the 908/02 proved nearly unbeatable. In 1969, while the Porsche 917 suffered teething problems, the 908/02 secured the International Championship for Makes with victories at Brands Hatch, Monza, the Targa Florio, Spa, and an overwhelming 1-2-3-4-5 at the 1000km Nürburgring. At the 1969 24 Hours of Le Mans, Hans Herrmann brought a 908 within the narrowest margin in the race's history — trailing Jacky Ickx's Ford GT40 by such a distance that the result was not confirmed until both cars crossed the line. The 908/02 chassis scored more than 50 major victories and over 100 podiums from 1969 to 1972, making it one of the most successful Porsche race cars ever campaigned.

The most famous chapter belongs to chassis 022. Originally built as a Langheck long-tail coupé for the 1969 Daytona 24 Hours, it was converted to Flunder Spyder specification and sold to Steve McQueen — a skilled racing driver who had competed in Porsche Speedsters years earlier. In March 1970, McQueen entered chassis 022 at the Sebring 12 Hours alongside Peter Revson, driving with a broken foot still in a cast from a motorcycle accident. Facing the full Porsche and Ferrari works efforts, McQueen's Solar Productions team finished second overall, just 22 seconds behind the winning Ferrari 512 S. Chassis 022 then became the camera car for McQueen's 1971 film Le Mans — fitted with three cameras, entered in the actual 1970 24 Hours race, completing 282 laps while a front-mounted camera cowling so large it obstructed forward visibility. Broad Arrow Auctions later estimated chassis 022 at $5.75 million. It is among the most significant Porsches in existence.

On this premium Porsche 908 Drive McQueen graphic tee, two 908 variants appear in race trim: the white #27 Shell-liveried Langheck long-tail coupé and the green Martini-liveried #12 Flunder Spyder. Engineering blueprint plan and side-elevation views anchor the lower composition. Bold PORSCHE 908 blazes in red above. The DRIVE McQUEEN tribute tag acknowledges the actor who made this car immortal.

In 2025, as original 908 examples command multi-million dollar auction results and Porsche's golden endurance era reaches peak collector status, this tribute graphic tee is the definitive piece for Porsche historians, motorsport enthusiasts, and anyone who understands that 22 seconds is not a margin — it is the entire story.
